The Australian market rose sharply today, following the positive lead provided by international markets overnight. Almost all of the sectors finished in positive territory with material stocks the clear standout performers.
The banking majors were mostly stronger, with ANZ, NAB and Westpac all finishing 0.7% higher. CBA (-0.2%) was the only one of the big four to not finish in positive.
All of the big miners enjoyed stellar gains, with BHP (+1.2%), Rio Tinto (+1.7%) and FMG (+5.7%) surging higher. The ASX 200 added 37 points (+0.8%) to settle at 4528, its highest close in since July 2011.
